News Flash: SFL Has Made Great Success in the Fourth-round National Discipline Assessment

On 28th December, China Academic Degrees & Graduate Education Development Centre (CDGDC) released the result of the fourth-round national discipline assessment, according to which “Foreign Language and Literature (0502)”of School of Foreign Languages of SNNU was ranked as B Level and was listed among the top 30% national foreign language disciplines.

Based on the Discipline Catalogue of Degree Awarding and Talent Training issued by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and the Chinese Ministry of Education, CDGDC carried out this comprehensive assessment to evaluate national first-level disciplines that enjoy authorization to grant doctoral or master's degrees. Altogether 38 of 41 universities and colleges with the authorization to grant doctoral degrees on Foreign Language and Literature participated the assessment; meanwhile, 163 universities and colleges with the authorization to grant master's degree also joined this assessment. The overall result showed that the discipline of Foreign Language and Literature in our school, featured by qualified comprehensive strength, is not only listed among the top national foreign languages disciplines (20%~30%), but also ranked first among evaluated universities of “985 project” and “211 project” as well as normal universities in Shaanxi Province and in northwest China.

In recent years, guided by Prof. Wang Qilong, Dean of SFL, and other Party leadership, teachers and staff members have made great efforts to focus on scientific research, discipline construction and talent training against the disadvantages of uneven resources, limited funds, and weak foundation. Having received 8 National Social Science Fund Projects in 2015 and 9 in 2016, SFL has been the champion among foreign language universities around the country for two consecutive years, which has laid solid foundation for this round of assessment as well as the application and establishment of doctoral degree authorization center of the first-level discipline.

P.S. The assessment result is showed in grading form. It is ranked by the percentile of “the score of overall level of disciplines”, which means that the disciplines ranked top 70% are graded in 9 levels: top 2% (or the first two) as A+; top 2%~top 5% (excluding 2%, the same to the following figures), A; top 5%~top 10%, A-; top 10%~top 20%, B+; top 20%~top 30%, B; top 30%~top 40%, B-; top 40%~top 50%, C+; top 50%~top 60%, C; top 60%~top 70%, C-.
